Get That Slippery Feeling
Does your baking soda solution (or paste) feel slippery before you rinse? This is the critical part of getting to No Poo Nirvana. The little slip between your fingers when you feel your roots lets you know that the baking soda has done it’s job of cleaning your hair. If you are not getting that “slippery feeling” then there are two possible reasons:
- You aren’t using enough baking soda (probably not the case here since you are suffering from dry scalp) but you can increase by 25% – 50% if needed.
- The baking soda isn’t fully dissolved and / or isn’t getting completely rinsed from your hair and scalp.
Depending on which method you use (method one or two) here are the steps to take:
Method One (BS Solution)
- Before applying the baking soda solution (method one) make sure it is completely dissolved and feels slippery to the touch between your finger.
- Apply to roots and massage your scalp. Do not rinse yet. Finish bathing, then come back and rinse your hair – well. Really, really, well.
- Just this once (track the results in your hair journal) pour your vinegar solution over your whole head (scalp included) to help balance the pH and moisturize your scalp. Allow to sit for 2 minutes then rinse completely. You can reapply the vinegar rinse to just your ends if you feel they need it.
Method Two (Paste)
- After applying the baking soda to your roots make sure you massage your scalp well. Do not rinse – yet. Finish bathing then come back and feel your roots. At this point they should feel slippery and little or not gritty feel to them. If not, wait a little longer or add a bit more moistened baking soda and allow to sit on your roots longer.
- Once you have that slippery feeling rinse your hair well. Really, really well. This is very critical for this method, especially if you have really thick hair.
- Just this once (track the results in your hair journal) pour your vinegar solution over your whole head (scalp included) to help balance the pH and moisturize your scalp. Allow to sit for 2 minutes then rinse completely. You can reapply the vinegar rinse to just your ends if you feel they need it.
Rinse, Rinse, Rinse
Failure to rinse out all the baking soda is probably the #2 reason for itchy no poo scalp (not getting that slippery feeling is #1). Just make sure you have achieved “slippery” before you rinse and (say it with me folks) rinse well.
Keep A Hair Journal
Using a hair journal will help you track the adjustments and tweaks you make, track your successes and record the days between your washes. Make changes one by one so you can target what works and what doesn’t.
With a few adjustments you’ll be itchy and flake free in no time…naturally.

Clean Your Hair Brush
Keeping any hair brush clean is important. After all, dirty brush = dirty hair. If you use a boar bristle brush this is EXTRA important because you are probably trapping some of those flakes and dry skin in the brush and then brushing them back into your hair (no bueno!) Never fear, cleaning your brush is easy. Here’s how to clean a boar bristle brush.
