First, let me say that I have NEVER understood the whole “Stupid is as stupid does” quote from Forest Gump (don’t know what it says about me, but Ron has his own ideas). If you KNOW – like really know what it means – please clue me in. BUT, I am sure that the quote is completely, 100% applicable to what happened.
One day I was touting the virtues of being an avid reader to the boys. Going on and on about how awesome getting lost in a good book is…yadda, yadda. Kade (15 years old) looks at me.
Kade: I don’t read. Reading is stupid. Reading is for stupid people.
Me: (silent shock and disbelief over the words I am hearing)
Kade: Really. I mean, I could go my whole life and not ever read a book, and that would be fine by me.
Ron: Son, do you have any idea how stupid you sound?
A Few Days Later When We Were All Sitting Around In The Living Room…
Me: What ‘cha doing Kade?
Kade: Lookin’ at this Finger Hut catalog. You should come look at this. They’ve got some really cool stuff in here – I really like this burr-GUN-dee one.
ALL: Huh?
Kade: This burr-GUN-dee thing. I love it. I think burr-GUN-dee is my favorite color.
Me: Burr-GUN-dee? I think what you mean is burgundy. How’s that “I don’t need to read” thing working for ya?
And now, when anyone does anything stupid in our house – well, they are burr-GUN-dee. It really is a great word. “You are such a burr-GUN-dee.” “That is soooo burr-GUN-dee.” “Whatever, burr-GUN-dee.” Yes. It is a beautiful thing – and Kade, he’s such a good sport he doesn’t even mind us picking on him about it.
You Gotta Luv Karma (and the way it bites stupidity in the ass)
